What we do in Woodstock

Horsth Plastering covers Woodstock, Vermont from our base in White River Junction. We handle the whole interior surface, insulation in the cavity, board on the studs, plaster or skim coat over it, and the decorative lime finishes on top.

On older houses here that usually means repair work: cracks, water damage, ceilings that have started to sag, and patches from previous owners that never matched. On new construction and additions it means insulation and walls flat enough that a painter can work with them straight away.

The houses in Woodstock

Most of the village is nineteenth century, and behind the paint it is horsehair plaster on split wood lath. That plaster is soft, it is thick, and it is holding trim and moldings nobody can replace. Tearing it out is the fast answer and almost always the wrong one. You lose the profile at the ceiling line, you lose the wall thickness at the casings, and you end up with a room that reads new inside an old house.

So we repair. Loose areas get keyed back to the lath, holes get filled from behind where there is access, and the whole wall gets skimmed over the top. The wall comes back flat, the trim never moves, and the room still looks its age in the way you want it to. Where a ceiling is genuinely gone, usually after a leak, we rebuild that section and match the texture on what is left of it.

When I needed a someone to hang and finish drywall in my new house, Diego was the only one to respond in a timely manner. He was extremely responsive and he scheduled faster than other companies have for my past projects. The communication was solid and the price was more than fair. The quality of finish was on point. I only recommend him to all my contractor friends/customers.

It is rare these days to find a company that I have had such an enthusiastically positive experience with. Diego’s guys are artisans. Watching them work is a ballet of talent. Price is very reasonable for such a great product, esp since our job had a certain amount of complexity involved - 14’ commercial ceilings at ASt Commerce Park. Highly recommend.

Diego and his crew are far and away the easiest sheetrock contractor I’ve worked with. They fit into my schedule, they worked hard and fast to hang and worked cleanly and thoughtfully to mud, tape, and sand. Can’t ask for anything more. I’m bring them in for my next project in Burlington and to work on my own home.

Working in Woodstock

Do I have to tear out horsehair plaster to get flat walls?

Usually not. If the plaster is still keyed to the lath across most of the wall we refasten the loose areas and skim over the top. That keeps the trim, the wall thickness and the ceiling profile, and it is normally less work and less mess than a full tear out and rebuild.

Do you charge to come out to Woodstock?

No. Estimates are free, including the visit and the written scope.

How soon can you start in Woodstock?

It depends on the season and the size of the job. Call 781 333 1180 and we will give you a real date rather than a maybe.

Do you work in occupied homes?

Yes. We seal the work area with plastic and zippered doorways and sand with HEPA vacuums so you can keep using the rest of the house.
